Diamond Shapes Explained: Round, Oval, Emerald, Pear & Princess
Round, oval, emerald, pear or princess? A clear guide to lab grown diamond shapes — how each one looks, sparkles and wears, and how to pick yours.
Ask ten people what makes a diamond beautiful and most will talk about sparkle. But before sparkle, there's shape — the outline you see when you look down at the stone. Shape sets the whole personality of a piece: classic or modern, soft or architectural, bold or understated.
Here's a simple guide to the five shapes we're asked about most, so you can choose with confidence.
Shape vs. cut: what's the difference?
People often use the words interchangeably, but they mean different things. Shape is the outline (round, oval, pear). Cut is how well the facets are angled and proportioned to return light. A beautifully shaped diamond with a poor cut will still look dull — which is why every Luzora diamond is cut in-house to strict proportions before it's ever set.
Round brilliant: the timeless favorite
The round brilliant is the most popular diamond shape in the world, and for good reason. Its 57–58 facets are engineered for maximum brilliance, so it delivers the most sparkle of any shape.
- Best for: anyone who wants classic, can't-go-wrong elegance
- Strengths: maximum fire and brilliance, hides inclusions and tint well
- Pairs well with: solitaire, halo, pavé and three-stone settings

Oval: brilliance with a longer look
An oval has nearly the same sparkle as a round, but its elongated outline makes it look larger for its carat weight and creates a flattering, lengthening effect on the finger.
- Best for: someone who loves round sparkle but wants something a little more distinctive
- Look for: a length-to-width ratio around 1.35–1.50 for a classic oval
- Watch out for: the "bow-tie" — a darker band across the center. A well-cut oval keeps it minimal

Emerald: quiet, architectural glamour
The emerald cut is a step cut — long, parallel facets that create a "hall of mirrors" effect instead of scattered sparkle. It feels elegant, vintage-inspired and very refined.
- Best for: minimalists and lovers of Art Deco style
- Strengths: large, open table that shows off the diamond's clarity
- Tip: because emerald cuts reveal more of the inside of the stone, clarity matters more. Our VS-or-better clarity standard keeps them crisp and clean

Pear: romantic and one-of-a-kind
Part round, part marquise, the pear (or teardrop) shape is soft and romantic. Worn point-down on a ring, it slims the finger; as a pendant or earring drop, it moves beautifully.
- Best for: someone who wants a ring that feels personal and unexpected
- Look for: a symmetrical outline and a protected tip — a prong or V-tip guards the point

Princess: modern and crisp
The princess cut is square with sharp corners and a brilliant faceting pattern, so it combines a modern, geometric outline with lots of sparkle.
- Best for: contemporary style and clean lines
- Strengths: excellent brilliance, efficient use of carat weight
- Tip: choose a setting that protects the four corners

How to choose your shape
If you're stuck, try these three questions:
- What does she already wear? Classic jewelry points to round; vintage pieces to emerald; bold, fashion-forward pieces to pear or princess.
- Do you want maximum sparkle or a softer glow? Brilliant shapes (round, oval, princess, pear) sparkle more; step cuts (emerald) glow with flashes of light.
- Do you want it to look bigger? Elongated shapes — oval, pear, emerald — tend to look larger than a round of the same carat weight.
