Eternity Bands & Anniversary Rings: Full vs Half Eternity Explained

Full or half eternity? Prong, channel or pavé? Everything you need to know about choosing a lab grown diamond eternity band or anniversary ring.

Luzora Jewels eternity band guide featuring full and half eternity rings, diamond settings, shapes, carat weights, and metal options.

An eternity band is one of the most meaningful rings you can give: an unbroken line of diamonds that stands for love without end. It works as a wedding band, an anniversary gift, a push present, or simply a ring stacked next to an engagement ring.

Here's how to choose one that fits her style — and her life.

Full eternity vs half eternity

A full eternity band has diamonds set all the way around the ring. It's the most dazzling option and sparkles from every angle.

A half eternity band has diamonds across the top half (or sometimes three-quarters) of the ring, with plain metal underneath.

Full eternity Half eternity
Sparkle 360° sparkle Sparkle where it's seen
Comfort Diamonds touch neighboring fingers Smooth metal underneath — more comfortable
Resizing Very limited Usually possible
Price Higher (more diamonds) Lower

Our tip: because a full eternity band generally can't be resized, it's important to get the size exactly right before ordering. Use our ring size finder on any ring page, or ask us for help.

Popular eternity band settings

  • Shared prong — minimal metal between the stones, so the diamonds look bigger and let in more light. Maximum sparkle.
  • Channel set — diamonds sit between two walls of metal. Smooth, snag-free and very secure; great for active hands.
  • Pavé — many small diamonds held by tiny beads of metal for a continuous "paved" shimmer. Delicate and perfect for stacking.
  • Bezel set — each diamond is wrapped in a thin rim of metal. Modern, protective and smooth to the touch.

Which diamond shape?

Round eternity bands are the classic — timeless and brilliant. Emerald and baguette bands feel sleek and Art Deco. Oval and pear bands look softer and more romantic, and they stand out in a stack.

How many carats?

Eternity bands are described by total carat weight (CTW) — the combined weight of every diamond. A lighter band (around 1 CTW) stacks beautifully with an engagement ring, while 2–5 CTW and above makes a statement on its own. Because lab grown diamonds cost significantly less than mined diamonds of the same quality, you can choose a fuller, more impressive band for the same budget.

Stacking with an engagement ring

  • Match the metal color for a seamless look, or mix metals for a modern stack.
  • Choose a band width close to the engagement ring's band so they sit neatly together.
  • If the engagement ring has a low setting or a halo, check that the band sits flush — a curved or contour band can help.

When to give an eternity band

Traditionally, eternity bands mark a milestone anniversary or the birth of a child — but there are no rules. Many couples now choose an eternity band as their wedding band from day one.
